Duba Plains - Okavango Delta
Great Plains Conservation is more of a family than a company, and this family shares one heart, a heart that beats for the conservation of our wilderness, wildlife and the communities that surround us. Duba is a family of hope, change and innovation and we want to share that passion with people across the world and inspire others to do the same.
It all started when five individuals in their 50’s pooled their considerable skills and experience to create innovative, world-class conservation projects in diverse and threatened habitats throughout Africa.
Duba Plains Camp
The renowned and totally brand new Duba Plains Camp sits in the heart of the Okavango Delta. A recent guest said it all, “I am not a religious person but I now understand that the Garden of Eden can now in fact be found at Duba Plains.” A matrix of palm-dotted islands, flood plains and woodland, the 77,000 acres private reserve typical of the region’s unique landscape. Duba Plains Camp offers 5 bespoke tents, in addition to a separate 2 bedroom suite aptly named the Duba Plains Suite, all designed by Dereck Joubert to blend into the forest and to take advantage of the shapes and textures of the shade but also to evoke the old classic African safari style of the 1920’s. It is a wildlife connoisseur’s getaway with literally thousands of animals in an almost endless pattern across the flood plains.
This is the place that the owners, and National Geographic filmmakers, conservationists and explorers, Dereck and Beverly Joubert, chose for their home base. Great Plains Conservation is the only operator on the concession, thereby offering guests the ultimate opportunity for private wildlife sightings.
Duba Plains has developed a model that creates maximum benefit for the community nearby with lease funds, jobs and other projects like our Big Cats Caring for Communities, Lamps for Learning (solar jars) Conservation Camp for Kids. This partnership ensures that these communities receive tangible and substantial benefits from wildlife conservation.
All the rooms are raised on recycled railway sleeper decking and offer guests amazing views of the surrounding floodplain and the steady stream of wildlife parading past. Each tent has a lounge area, with place to write and do your photographic downloads, as well as the opportunity for private dining in your tent. Each guest tent offers a private verandah plus beautifully appointed en-suite facilities consisting of flush loo, double vanities and indoor and outdoor showers and luxurious baths. Ceiling fans, an environmentally friendly air-conditioning system over the guests’ bed, and careful tent design maintain a comfortable climate for rest and relaxation. Guests will be able to enjoy their own private plunge pool and outdoor under cover sala/day rest area. The main area consists of a large raised dining room, and comfortable lounge with private dining areas, wine cellar and library, with ample space for our guests to either get away and be private or be all together if they want to. Our media room is used for photographic work for guests. Guests staying at the Duba Plains Suite automatically enjoy the services of a private game drive vehicle with their own guide as well as a private butler and chef. The camp’s centre-point is the gathering place of all bush experiences – an extended deck into the swamp under the giant ebony trees.
Duba Plains prides itself on its extraordinary wildlife experiences and intimate up close exposure to the best of the best wildlife, from lions and leopards to elephants and buffalo and everything in between. Duba Plains is also known for interesting Kalahari species like Aardwolf and Pangolins.
Each of our camps have executive chefs and a hand picked wine list. Duba Plains is no exception and boasts a cellar of a few hundred bottles of wine from friends of the Jouberts – winemakers who tell their story beyond the bottle, conservationists, people who have a community they support or something they give back besides being on the Great Plains Wine Selection for the quality of their wines. We will offer the service of shipping cases of wine to our guests should they fall in love with a particular blend or label during their stay.
Duba Plains Camp is only accessible to guests by scheduled air transfers or private air charters. On arrival at the airfield, the transfer to camp is approximately seven minutes. Duba Plains Camp’s (category B) airfield is licensed for aircraft as large as a King Air, Pilatus PC-12 and Cessna Caravan. The co-ordinates are S19″01.901′; E22″42.712′. The distance from Maun to Duba Expeditions Airfield is 130km, and flying time in a Cessna Caravan is between 30 and 45 minutes. Duba Plains is roughly 290km from Kasane with a flight time of an hour in a Cessna Caravan. Flying times naturally vary depending on the type of aircraft used and prevailing weather conditions.
Duba Plains Camp is a fully integrated community empowerment project on land leased directly from five local communities, who in turn receive all of the lease revenue. Capacity-building is a priority and currently 80% of the staff at Duba Plains Camp come from these communities. Since May 2010 we have been working constantly on plans to ensure we maintain and improve our sustainable operations whilst reducing our footprint on the environment. With the successes and lessons learned from our other Botswana properties at Selinda and Zarafa, Duba Plains Camp will adhere to similar standards of responsible environment implementation practises as well as ensuring environmental mitigation (associated with driving in boggy substrate). We are committed to developing an ever-lighter footprint.

Best Time to Visit Botswana
The Okavango Delta, Moremi and Chobe are the most popular parks in Botswana. If you’re planning to visit Botswana for the national parks of Moremi and Chobe it’s best done during the dry season and winter from March to November. The Okavango Delta can be flooded from June to October though this can also be a beautiful sight for our guests to experience.
It is your responsibility to check the entry visa requirements with the individual embassy of each country you intend visiting prior to departure.
